Dialectical Behavior Therapy

What is DBT?

A form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), DBT integrates CBT with skills training, acceptance techniques, and mindfulness to bring about massive positive changes in just 12 months.  Under the guidance of an experienced DBT therapist, you'll master powerful strategies for reducing distress, regulating emotions, and forging stronger, more fulfilling relationships.  Originally crafted for those with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), DBT is the gold standard treatment for BPD.  Over time, it has been found to be effective for a wide array of issues beyond BPD including depression, anxiety, anger, trauma, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, risky behaviors, turbulent relationships, and more.

What makes DBT different?

I offer comprehensive DBT. This means you can participate in DBT treatment exactly as DBT was designed, with three parts: individual therapy sessions with a trained therapist, DBT skills group, and DBT phone coaching (where you can reach out to me outside of session for skills coaching). The DBT skills cover the topics of Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance, Interpersonal Effectiveness, and Mindfulness.

Additionally, I participate in DBT Consultation Team, a group of DBT therapists who meet weekly and are extensively trained and stay on top of the DBT research.  We also work closely together, so you benefit from the wisdom and experience of the whole team.

Can you explain what Dialectical means?

“Dialectics” is the philosophy that opposing experiences can be simultaneously valid; we can experience dialectical dilemmas wherein what we want is in opposition with how we live. For example: we want to have meaningful relationships, while we struggle to trust others.  A dialectical perspective looks to resolve these dilemmas with a dynamic understanding of problems in context and a non-judgmental perspective.
